An easy morning routine for the rest of your life

It’s amazing what happens when you let your mind wander.

I used to snap myself out of daydreams. Like somehow those dazes were a bad thing. I’d click back into a dull job, or that small conversation, or that long commute.

Away from the freedom of my thoughts.

I don’t anymore.

My mind wanders. And I let it.

I people-watch, look to the sky, listen to the birds. Admiring, and taking it all in.

Here’s why I think you should too.

There’s merit to the grey time, the reverie.

When I awoke from any trance, my brain, inexplicably, was able to make connections.

It shifted up a gear.

If I was stuck on a project, I was able to write. If I needed ideas, they came to me.

Before, I sat at my desk, rubbing my eyes, slouched in the chair, exhaling. Empty-minded. Blank page.

Now, zoning out is my key to getting stuff done. My key to making connections.

To help me zone out, I start my day like this. It’s a routine I learned from the copywriting master Gary Halbert.

  1. I set my alarm 15 minutes before usual. (this removes any urgency for wakening)

  2. Then, I make the bed. (a crucial step to waking up and getting things done)

  3. Next I go to the bathroom to take care of business. (yes number 2, and brushing teeth, washing face. This freshens you for battle)

  4. Then I put on some comfy clothes and immediately leave the house for a 20 minute walk. (don’t think, just go. This is where I let my mind dawdle)

  5. Once home, I sink a big glass of water and eat some food. (this infuses your body with nutrients to ensure peak performance)

  6. After that I grab a shower and dress in fresh, crisp clothes. Ritual over. No baggage.

  7. Then I write. And wha-da-ya know, I’m not **staring at a blank screen anymore.

The perfect way to start the day?

Hardly.

But its pretty good.

Who knows, some of the things you spy on your walk could help you out of a jam.

All I know is, if you give this routine a shot for 30 days, I guarantee it’ll make your life better. Probably much better.

It’s Simple, but powerful.

Try it out. Let your mind drift. Get going. And See what happens.
