The recruiters call was just 2 minutes:

“Hey Ryan, It’s Salli here. I’m calling about your recent interview”

I stood up from the table, walked to the stairs and took a seat.

“Oh, Hi Sally, how’re you?”

“Yeah, very good Ryan, thanks”.

I was biting my nails.

“Listen, this is just to give you some feedback on your Interview with Lorraine on Wednesday” she said

“Okay, perfect”

”Lorraine said you had an extensive grip on marketing as a whole, that you had great experience and that she actually had loads of fun interviewing you”

My heart was racing. I hadn’t been hired by the previous 8 companies.

“Haha, I had loads of fun as well”

However…” she said

My heart sunk.

“She said you’re just not what the company is looking for at the moment. Unfortunately”

My head fell between my legs. Rejection No.9.

“But thank you for your patience and effort in the process. I really wish you all the luck in your job search”

I ran my hand through my hair.

“That’s no worries at all Salli. I appreciate you calling to update me. It was nice to hear it first hand. Thank you”

“Aw I always try to call when I can get a hold of people. I’m sorry it hasn't worked out this time.”

“Its okay” I said. “Thanks for the opportunity. I hope you have a great day”

“Alright Ryan, you too. Take care.”

“Yup, buh-bye”

All no’s.

But not all no’s, are bad.

After the ninth rejection I decided to get real with freelance copywriting.

I bought the domain for This Is Copy, built a website, fleshed out what services I'd offer, registered with Companies House, and began creating consistent content committed to helping people write better copy.

I have a good feeling about it all.

About trying to help, about being selfless, about keeping going.

And I guess that’s the one take away from this.

You might be down, out, done for. But keep going. Things will find their shape.
